NBC to shut down Olympic Channel in September

The Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA will shut down on Sept. 30. NBC has been notifying cable and satellite operators this morning that the five-year old channel will go dark in three months. “In order to best reach our target audiences, we are reevaluating our programming distribution strategy regarding the content that currently airs on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA with our partners at the IOC and USOPC,” an NBC Sports spokesperson said via email. “We will be announcing our exciting new plans for Olympic content in the fall.”

LOOKING BACK: NBC rebranded its Universal HD channel as the Olympic Channel five years ago, in July '17. The channel, which was a partnership with the IOC and the USOPC, carried the tennis and wrestling competition during the Tokyo games -- the first time it carried live Olympic programming. Much of the channel’s schedule was filled with old competitions and repeats of shows that aired on other networks. Olympic Channel will be NBC’s second sports network to go dark within nine months. At the beginning of the year, NBC shuttered NBCSN, moving much of its programming to USA Network and NBC’s Peacock streaming service.

LOOKING AHEAD: NBC is staying mum, for now, about where it will house the Olympic content that runs on Olympic Channel. But the company has been trying to grow Peacock, and it is a good bet that some of the programming will wind up on that service.
