SBJ ALL IN: Diahann Billings-Burford

Diahann Billings-Burford

Chief Executive Officer, RISE

Under her leadership, RISE was the first group within sports to use its influence to prioritize civic engagement and voting. In 2020, it held nearly 90 voter registration and education sessions with teams, leagues, college athletic departments and more. More than 5,000 athletes, coaches and staff across seven pro leagues and the NCAA participated, and RISE held several public virtual events with leagues and teams that reached more than 100,000 fans. RISE also helped build the “Rally the Vote” coalition. Billings-Burford, who has led RISE since 2018, is transitioning the group from a private foundation — founded by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross — to a public charity. Its Building Bridges Through Basketball program won the Corporate Community Impact Award at the 2019 ESPN Sports Humanitarian Awards.
