Chengdu's FISU World University Games postponed to 2023

The International University Sports Federation confirmed the new schedule of the Chengdu FISU World University Games. It’ll now run July 28 to Aug. 8, 2023, and remains in Chengdu, the biggest city in southwestern China.

The decision follows the strict COVID-19 controls and restrictions in China. Unlike the Olympics, the FISU World University Games has run every two years since 1959. The event was originally scheduled in Chengdu in 2021, with the 2023 edition in Yekaterinburg, Russia. It's not clear how the Chengdu games will affect the Yekaterinburg edition.

In May, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) also announced the postponement of the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games. This was supposed to be a grand moment for esports, joining an Olympic-sanctioned event as a medal sport for the first time. It’s more likely the Asian Games will keep the same rhythm with the Chengdu World University Games, as the reasons behind the postponements are the same (COVID-19 control). The OCA has not confirmed the new schedule of the Hangzhou Asian Games.
