Reds battle lagging attendance numbers at Great American Ball Park

Attendance at the Reds' Great American Ball Park is "lagging far behind previous seasons," including the '18 season when the team had its lowest-attended year since '84, and attendance is also "down 15.9% from the same point in 2019," according to Bob Nightengale of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. There is "typically a jump in attendance during summer months because school is out and the weather is better," but the Reds "haven't attracted a crowd above 26,000 fans since April 23." The team ranks 23rd in MLB with an "average attendance of 16,519," and the Reds were 19th in average attendance in 2019 and as high as 14th in 2014. The Reds, at their current average attendance, are "on pace to drawn 1.373 million fans in their 80 home games, which would be the lowest in Great American Ball Park history." The club "hasn't drawn fewer than 1.629 million fans in a season without capacity limits since 1984, and it still attracted 1.505 million fans last year." There was a lot of "fan frustration" throughout the offseason when ownership "mandated a lower payroll and the Reds parted with several of their most popular players following an 83-win season." The Reds were "essentially eliminated from the playoff race after their 3-22 start," the "worst record through 25 games in franchise history." They entered yesterday's off day with the "worst record in the National League at 25-47" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 6/28).
