Allianz Field installing GrassMax hybrid surface to improve pitch

Allianz Field is undergoing work to improve the grass surface, and Minnesota United coach Adrian Heath predicts that Iowa Sports Turf's "hybrid 'stitch' system that reinforces the current grass with synthetic fibers will be 'a big improvement,'" according to Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. Work has already begun on the field and is "expected to be completed by the end of the month." Allianz Field opened in '19 with "multimillion dollar, state-of-the-art heating and drainage systems installed beneath the field," but it "has had issues since." The new system is the "same as those installed in Brazil's Maracana and English Premier League West Ham, Leicester and Leeds United stadiums" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/19). Minnesota United expects its new pitch to be completed by the end of this month, and it will host the MLS All-Star Game on Aug. 10. The GrassMax hybrid stitch system has synthetic fibers to stabilize the root zone of the field to prevent divots and ensure a more level surface. The system is guaranteed to last at least 10 years and will especially help maintain Allianz Field during Minnesota’s colder months (Andrew Cohen, SportTechie).
