Sports betting ads proliferate during "Hockey Night in Canada" telecasts

The "Hockey Night in Canada" TV game package “appears to have morphed into Hockey Night at the Casino," with every ad “seemingly about betting,” according to Roy MacGregor of the GLOBE & MAIL. It is “not just the commercials,” as Sportsnet now has programmed segment, SN Bets, that is “intended to teach viewers more about the subtleties of betting on more than just the game.” Once “the door opened” to legalized online betting in Canada last August, sports broadcasts “exploded with advertising” various sportsbooks and betting platforms. This is a “new annoyance never before seen.” Hockey Historian Eric Zweig said that "he 'cringes' when he sees well-known hockey personalities promoting betting." Zweig: “It’s like the whole world has forgotten the long, mostly dark, history of sports and gambling.” Toronto-based filmmaker and sports fan Stuart Henderson called the betting ads “relentless” (GLOBE & MAIL, 5/13).
