Battle of Alberta headlines second round of NHL playoffs

The Flames’ 3-2 OT win over the Stars in Game 7 last night set the stage for a “long-awaited spring showdown with the arch-enemy” Oilers, according to Wes Gilbertson of the CALGARY HERALD. Fans across Alberta have been “dreaming about a best-of-seven” between the province’s two NHL teams for years, as there has not been a “post-season edition of this iconic rivalry since way back in 1991.” The rivalry had become a “spring staple in the 1980s.” The renewal will feature “four of the top eight scorers” from the regular season -- the Oilers' Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, along with the Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk (CALGARY HERALD, 5/16). The AP’s Stephen Whyno notes the hockey community “will gladly take the first Flames-Oilers series” in 31 years. While the single-season North Division last year “guaranteed a Canada-based team in the final four, the same will happen with one from Alberta” this season (AP, 5/16). Tkachuk said, "It'll be exciting -- it's great for all of Alberta.” Gaudreau: "I’ve been here for nine years and never had even a sniff of a chance to play them in the playoffs. It’s pretty special. It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be good for the province, fun for them and us” (, 5/16).
