MLB attendance near '19 figure through teams' first 12 home games

The Blue Jays led the way as 17 MLB teams “saw significant attendance gains or remained relatively flat” through their first 12 home games this season when compared to the ’19 season, according to Gabe Lacques of USA TODAY. The combined attendance is “down only slightly” -- 1.3% -- when compared to ’19, but a “closer look at individual franchises shows perhaps even more encouraging signs.” The Jays are up 59% from ’19 after spending the previous two seasons away from Rogers Centre. The A’s attendance drops have been well documented, but the “most telling group is a half-dozen largely major-market teams who are down between 6% to 12%.” The Cubs top that list, as evidenced by the April 25 crowd of 25,005. That was the “smallest at Wrigley Field in a non-pandemic year since 2013” and could serve as an “indication the club’s competitive indifference the past two years no longer flies after the team famously broke a 108-year championship streak” in ’16 (USA TODAY, 5/10).
