Scott C. Butera is the President of Interactive Gaming at MGM Resorts International. In this role, Mr. Butera is responsible for the development and operation of MGM’s on-line sports betting, casino, fantasy and social betting platforms. Mr. Butera is also responsible for MGM’s sports league and team partnerships as well as its digital media. Since joining MGM, Mr. Butera has been instrumental in the negotiation and formation of the company’s joint venture with GVC Holdings for on-line sports betting and casino gaming in the United States, a market access partnership with Boyd Gaming and a historic partnership with the NBA designating MGM as its official gaming partner.
Prior to MGM, Mr. Butera was Commissioner of the Arena Football League and oversees League operations for team franchises located in major markets in the United States including Washington, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Now in his second season, he is spearheading a business and brand restructuring program involving franchise growth development, expanded broadcast and social media contracts, new sponsor affiliations, and League capital and financing.
Mr. Butera’s business background features strong finance and operating experience. He has successfully restructured balance sheets for major corporate entities and served as both CEO and COO of the entities to help guide their operations to full renewal. Prior to joining the AFL at the end of 2014 he was President and CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino where he architected a $2.7 billion balance sheet restructuring and led the effort to revitalize the Foxwoods brand. The Resort generated $1.2 billion in annual revenue through gaming, hospitality and entertainment.
From 2008 to 2011, Butera was CEO of Tropicana Entertainment where he led the iconic brand in its emergence from Chapter 11. He was responsible for restructuring the company’s debt and reinstating its gaming licenses in key business jurisdictions in Nevada, New Jersey and Indiana. Through strategic capital investments, streamlined operations and modernized marketing, he helped the company reach a level sustain profitability while it built new revenue sources and long-term customer loyalty.
Butera’s success as a business builder stems from his work in executive capacities at large complex business concerns. He was Chief Operating Officer of the Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas (2007-08), President of Metroflag Management, also in Las Vegas, and President, Chief Operating Officer, and Executive Vice President of Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc.
Butera’s financial background includes 20 years in investment banking with UBS Investment Bank, Credit Suisse First Boston, Smith Barney and Bear Stearns & Co. During that time, he concentrated on analysis and client service for companies in the real estate, lodging, gaming and leisure industries. He began his career in June 1990 as an accountant in the financial services practice of Coopers & Lybrand in New York.
Butera earned his bachelor’s degree in economics at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, where he was recently elected to serve on its Board of Trustees. The Massachusetts native earned his MBA at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business.
